Legally mandated process prepares for changes after November presidential election.
As the upcoming 2020 national election gets closer to being nearly five months away, members of the White House have begun to get ready for the result. Earlier in the month of May, the president’s administration appointed a coordinating council, led by Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to plan and organize any needed transition efforts, and coordinate with the Biden campaign. In addition, the Office of Management and Budget also notified agencies to prepare for the possible transition.
These actions are required by law and will have an impact regardless of the outcome of the election. If President Trump wins reelection, history shows that nearly half of the staff members and officials leave within six months. A newly elected candidate would need to appoint over 4,000 positions, of which 1,200 require confirmation by the Senate.
